When it comes to horror movies there is a difference between fear and revulsion. Fear is one of our basest emotions that bubbles up from our core and grabs hold of us. Fear can imprint upon us something that stays with us forever. Revulsion is easy. One part blood, two parts gore, mix in a little pain and you have revulsion. Too often cinema today goes for the revulsion factor rather than the fear. What scares us is not always what we see but what we imagine we see. When forced to fill in the gaps our imaginations begin to place our own fears within the cracks and crevices. A vague monster in the shadows could be anything when our imaginations take hold. What follows is a list of movies that can grab the visceral fear within us all. Each of these movies, in no particular order, goes after a base fear. The fear of the unknown, of neighbors, water, Alien encounters, possession, demonic forces and of the shuffling hoardes. Pick your poison and watch at your own risk.
