I’m all about creating a beautiful website. Beauty keeps people on a website. There’s so much more to a website than beauty. The actual website mechanics are very important. Just creating a site, that is somewhat good looking, isn’t what makes a person a web designer.
What good is a site if you have missing files, words misspelled, misconfiguration, poor SEO. Most clients can’t even see under the hood for the code to know what to look for. We lost a quote to a firm, which happens and I’m completely fine with it in most cases. They may want a different aesthetic, need a specific timeline, or personalities may not mesh.
This time, I just felt bad for the client. I had run the website report that analyzes their site before we did our assessment. They scored poorly which is not a surprise. The site was older and needed some tech updates. The client was focused on the look of the site. Curiosity got me and I looked at the new site today. It was a basic site no bells or whistles. We do basic sites if that’s what you need and you’re limited to your budget. As a matter of fact, I always say we can work with any budget.
To me… marketing is about growing. If you do your marketing correct you do start off small. If you have a good foundation you can build year after year. That’s what I love to do. I don’t want to spend your whole marketing budget. I work with you to get the most out of your budget.
WHAT REALLY MAKES MY SKIN CRAWL THOUGH! Is when someone says their a professional and builds a site for someone and it’s technically insufficient. Anyone can throw a site together and make it look good. The client doesn’t know or understand the other important keys to a site. Why would they? It’s not fun to look at keywords, header tags. Client’s are more interested on what font or photo matches their brand. Many firms don’t run reports or my favorite they run their own reporting software? So in 3 months the client won’t see any new views or visitors to their site because chances are google isn’t even indexing your site because the SEO is poor, it has broken links or broken files. Then I can guarantee if they’ve done a bad job with that…. they’ve put no thought into security.
You need a good foundation for people to get to your site. Our reporting software we pay a hefty monthly fee for. The system supplies an Overall Score, Accessibility Score, Content Score, Marketing Score, and Technology Score. Once a site goes live from Tint Press we do our best to get you excellent scores on Accessibility and Technology. Marketing and Content are the sections that most business need to work on and is an ongoing process. If you’re going to spend hundreds of dollars on a new website you should expect Accessibility and Technology to be excellent in the first 30 days!
Here are the stats of the site that sent me off into a tizzy. Maybe I’m an overachiever but 3.8 out of 10, 5.0 Technology, 7.6 Accessibility. Average and Poor just doesn’t cut it. Technology and Accessibility has to be Excellent!
